Teeth Whitening

A smile is a curve that sets many things right. And when sparkling white teeth accompany the smile, the result is much better. Every person would like to have sparkling white teeth but most have coloured teeth ranging from pale yellow to light brown.

Teeth Whitening or Teeth bleaching is a procedure that improves the colour of the teeth.

According to the FDA, the term bleaching is permitted to be used only when the teeth can be whitened beyond their natural color. This applies strictly to products that contain bleach – typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.

The term whitening, on the other hand, refers to restoring a tooth's surface color by removing dirt and debris. So any product that cleans (like a toothpaste) is considered a whitener. Of course, the term whitening sounds better than bleaching, so it is more frequently used – even when describing products that contain bleach.

Professional Teeth Whitening

A professional teeth whitening treatment is more expensive, however it is the safest and is generally more effective. A dental specialist will first determine if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening, then decide which type of whitening system would best fit your situation. Before the whitening procedure the dental specialist will remove any general debris and plaque in the teeth that may hamper the whitening process. If you have cavities or gum disease, this will need to be taken care of prior to treatment.

Although teeth whitening is very effective, there can be short term disadvantages, such as sore gums or sore teeth from the bleach. Crowns, bridges, bonding, and fillings only return to their original coloring; they do not lighten any further with professional teeth whitening. Different stains require different solutions, therefore it is important to have a consultation with an oral health professional before trying a teeth whitening product.

Teeth whitening results do not last forever - on average you can expect between several months and a year. However the good news is that you can prolong the effects of teeth whitening by simply avoiding smoking and limiting the amount of foods and beverages that stain teeth.
